About Tower Collector
Tower Collector lets you map mobile network coverage by uploading GPS locations of cell towers in your area. Contribute to OpenCellID.org and BeaconDB — two major open-source projects that build worldwide databases of cellular infrastructure. Every tower location you collect strengthens network mapping for researchers, developers, and anyone who needs accurate coverage data.
The app uses specially optimized GPS parameters to minimize battery drain while gathering precise tower coordinates. Once you've collected data from your neighborhood or region, export it in multiple formats: CSV, JSON, GPX, KML, and KMZ files. This flexibility means you can analyze the data yourself, share it with researchers, or feed it directly into mapping tools and GIS software.
OpenCellID.org aims to create a comprehensive, freely accessible database of cell tower locations worldwide. By uploading your observations, you're adding critical coverage intelligence that helps locate mobile devices without GPS, improve network planning, and support academic research into cellular infrastructure. Your contributions appear in the public database where anyone can access them.
BeaconDB collects location data for a wider range of wireless infrastructure — cell towers, WiFi access points, and Bluetooth beacons. All cell tower data you submit is aggregated with contributions from volunteers everywhere and released under the Creative Commons CC-0 license, ensuring the data remains open and freely usable forever.
Privacy is built in: Tower Collector does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information, device identifiers, or data that could directly identify you. The app only gathers and uploads the GPS coordinates of towers themselves — nothing about your phone, location history, or identity.
